Knife Related Information

The following information is provided to help you in selecting a knife that will fit your needs and give you many years of service.

Blade Grinding And Finish

I do both flat and hollow grinding on my blades. This is a customer option on orders. All of my blades have a hand rubbed satin finish. I no longer offer mirror polished blades.

Cost And Payment

I am constantly trying to find better and more efficient ways to make my knives in order to keep the prices where the customer can afford them. I do not require deposits unless special materials are ordered (such as ivory or mother of pearl). I also do not want the customer to pay in advance. When I start your knife, I will contact you and let you know it is time to send payment. I accept personal checks, money orders and PayPal. I reserve the option to wait until your check clears before shipment. I do not add a fee to PayPal users. Most prices include shipping by us postal priority mail. Shipment outside the united states will require the difference in postage to be added.

I realize that buying a handmade knife is a major investment for most people. I offer a layaway plan for anyone that is interested. You decide how much you can pay down and this puts your knife on hold if it is in stock. If it is an order, I will go ahead and build the knife while you are paying for it. I encourage customers using this service to not take over two months to pay it out. This arrangement is strictly confidential between the customer and I.

Damascus Steel

I have been forging my own damascus steel for several years. I use 1095 tool steel layered with L6 or 15N20. I make steel with several different layer counts, depending on the pattern. Standard patterns are random, ladder, and twist. I am always experimenting with other makers to come up with different steel combinations and pattern variations. Damascus steel should give you a good, serviceable knife. It is a high maintenance steel. Care should be given to keep it clean and rust free.

Folding Knives

I make liner locks, slip joints and automatics. I have a few models that I have made in the past. I also make new patterns as I go along and will try to build from your ideas.

Handle Material

I use a variety of handle materials. My favorite being bone from a variety of different animals. I stock cow bone and camel bone. Since dying bone is a difficult process the color varies, I will obtain colored and stabilized bone on special request. I use quite a bit of "weathered" elk antler. This is one of the nicest handle materials that I have found. I try to keep a variety of stabilized wood on hand. If you have a special wood in mind and I do not have it I will try to order it. If hard use material is needed I stock micarta and G-10. Colors can be ordered on request.

Knife Construction

My standard construction of fixed blade knives does not include bolsters or guards except on special order. Most knives have integral guards except for a few straight models. All handle material is attached with pins. This allows for replacement of handles if you damage your knife. I will also replace handles with other material on request. Liners underneath handle scales is standard. Most models come with lanyard holes.

Knife Orders

To place an order for one of my knives you may email me at winstonknives@yahoo.com or phone me at 662-418-4932. I do not give definite delivery dates. You may choose one of my standard models with your choice of handle materials. I will also work with you if you have something special in mind that you would like to have made.

Sheathes

All of my knives are furnished with a leather sheath. I use top quality leather for sheath construction. Sheathes are oiled and waxed. All are sewn with high strength nylon thread. I will use kydex on special order for some knife patterns. I do not recommend storing your knife in a leather sheath for long periods of time. Due to some of the chemicals used in the tanning process of the leather and moisture retention, this can affect the surface of the knife steel.

Steel

Most of my fixed blade and folding knives are made from D2 steel. After many years of making knives and receiving feedback from customers, I have settled on D2 steel as being one of the best tool steels for a combination of good edge retention and at the same time being fairly low maintenance. I also stock CPM S30V and CPM 154.

Warranty

My goal is to provide you with a knife that will give you excellent service and also that you will be proud to own and show to your friends. When you receive your knife and are not happy with it you may return it for a full refund or I will make another to replace it. I heat treat and test in accordance with the steel manufacturers guidelines . If you do not get satisfactory performance from your knife then you can send it back for a refund or I will replace it with another knife. All natural handle material expands and contracts due to the environment it is in. At times this causes cracking. I obviously have no control over this and do not warrant against it. I will however replace handle material for cost of material and installation. Knives that are ordered with special materials (ivory, pearl, etc.) may or may not be returnable.
